[Feature] What We Should Do in 2023: Let’s Not Live As We Have So Far / Paik Nak-chung

The Quarterly Changbi 199, Spring 2023

Abstract

The feature of this issue contains articles exploring directions for our ways forward in order to build a society deserving the term “country” on various dimensions, from the individual to civil movements and communal solidarity. Professor Emeritus Paik Nak-chung of Seoul National University explains how the emergence of the Yoon government is not a suspen-sion of the Candlelight Revolution, but an irregular event that happened because of it, and how all kinds of outlandish events currently witnessed throughout our society, including in the political arena and media, are also the result of that revolution. While emphasizing that we cannot break through even the current phase if we continue to live as we have so far, he argues that the overthrowing of the current regime is a matter that requires our imagination and he carefully examines various possibilities. At the same time, he proposes that we work to come up with creative ways of practice, while not ignoring our immediate tasks, as our current battles are essential for gaebyeok (great opening), which will fundamentally change human society.
