1961년 경남 울산에서 출생하여 중앙대 문예창작학과를 졸업하고 인천 지역에서 노동운동을 했다. 1988년 『실천문학』 봄호에 단편소설 「내딛는 첫발은」을 발표하면서 작품 활동을 시작했다. 초기에는 주로 계급적인 시각으로 노동자의 성장과 각성을 그린 소설을 발표했으나, 최근에는 베트남의 역사와 문화, 아시아 각국의 문화적 소통 등에 관심을 기울이고 있다. 소설집 『내일을 여는 집』(1991), 『랍스터를 먹는 시간』(2003), 장편소설 『십년간』『당신의 원편』(2000), 산문집 『아름다운 저항』『하노이에 별이 뜨다』등을 펴냈다. 제9회 신동엽창작기금(1991), 제11회 오영수문학상(2003), 제3회 황순원문학상(2003)을 받았다.

Bang Hyun-suk is an eminent Korean realism writer of the 1980s. Even though society has changed and radical labor movements have been on the wane, his literary world, which is based on a sharp awareness of the actual conditions of life and the aspiration for a better society, remains the same. Bang does not limit his art to depictions of past events. “The Form of Being” represents a sincere attempt to find a solution through literature to the problematic relationship between Vietnam and Korea, engendered by Korea’s participation in the Vietnam War, and illuminates not just the past, but the present as well as the future of the two countries’ relationship. Bang is currently the president of Society of Young Writers For Understanding Vietnam, and he continues to devote much of his creative energy to exploring Vietnam’s troubled past.
