서울대 문리대 정치학과 졸업. 1964년 6·3 사태 때 배후의 인물로 구속된 이래, 30여년 동안 민주화운동을 막후에서 주도했다. 민주화운동단체 결성에 직간접적으로 참여했으며, 각종 성명서 작성, 구속인사에 대한 변론자료 준비와 구명운동, 구속자 가족들에 대한 지원, 해외 지원세력과의 연대, 수배자에 대한 은신처 마련과 수발 등으로 민주화운동을 뒷받침하면서 재야민주화운동의 대부로 알려져왔다. 1987년 6·29 선언 이후 평화신문 편집국장으로 평화신문의 창간을 주도했으며, 김영삼정부 때 대통령 교문사회수석비서관을 역임했다.
A graduate of Seoul National University (BA; political science), Kim Jeong-nam led the democratization movement in Korea behind the scene for some 30 years after his arrest on a charge of having masterminded the June 3 Incident of 1964. He not only participated directly and indirectly in the formation of pro-democracy civilian organizations but also engaged in a variety of sociopolitical activities including the drafting of public statements, preparation of legal data for arrested activists, provision of support to arrestees’ families, cooperation with activists abroad, and provision of refuge to activists pursued by government authorities. Following the June 29 Declaration of 1987, he led establishment of the daily Pyeonghwa Shinmun as its chief editor and served as the senior education, culture, and society secretary for the former President Kim Young Sam.
