[Feature] Representations of Inequality and “Realism” / Hwang Jung-a

The Quarterly Changbi 185, Autumn 2019

Abstract

Beginning with a discussion of equality, as a journey toward the completion of humanity and civilization, literary critic Hwang Jung-a meticulously analyzes various social discourses and literary works that interpret our reality of inequality. Critically referring to Nancy Fraser’s discussion, she points out how the reality of inequality represented in Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go and Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite eventually cultivates a self-fulfilling realism. The “realism of equality” presented in the conclusion of this article seems like an important proposal for exploring the possibility of the commons.
