[Literary Criticism] The Universe Held in Story: Hwang Sok-yong’s Novel Halmae (Korean Literature and the Possibilities of K Thought #2) by Baik Ji-yeon

The Quarterly Changbi 212, Summer 2026

The serialized, year-long 60th anniversary project “Korean Literature and the Possibility of K Thought” continues with its second installment, in which literary critic Baek Ji-yeon examines Hwang Sok yong’s Halmae to assess the role and important responsibilities of Korean literature within world literature. She vividly introduces how Hwang’s novel broadens the horizons of a global ecological narrative and what distinctly Korean modes of thought and sensibility underlie that expansion.
