[Feature] Sci-Fi and the Search for a New Reality / Bok Do Hoon

The Quarterly Changbi 186, Winter 2019

Abstract

Bok Do Hoon examines various aspects and the newness of Korean sci-fi, which has recently emerged as a “hot” genre, doing so through the prism of reality. In particular, he discusses works of Kim Cho-yeop, a rookie writer in this genre who is drawing much attention, and Park Mun-yeong, who embodies the achievement of feminism in this genre. He pays attention to their handling of antagonism in reality while appropriately responding to this genre’s demand for a deepened critical perspective. At the same time, Bok takes a look at the potential of sci-fi literature to illuminate reality in a new spectrum, and broaches the question: What are new aspects of our reality that require a sci-fi approach?
