[Feature] The Present-ness of Toni Morrison / Kim Miehyeon

The Quarterly Changbi 186, Winter 2019

Abstract

Illuminating the topic of this issue’s feature on the horizon of world literature, Kim Miehyeon discusses the “present-ness” of Tony Morrison, who persistently explored the issue of racism, which has been intensifying recently. She pays attention to the fact that Morrison tried to construct a present meaning out of the painful past of African Americans by reviving it rather than simply describing it. She emphasized that Morrison’s work urges change toward new possibilities, with her writing remaining loyal to her racial identity, even while it digs sharply into traumas and divisions etched in the psychology of African Americans.
