The Quarterly Changbi 196, Summer 2022
Abstract
While carefully examining Paik Nak-chung’s recent book, D. H. Lawrence: a Western Kaebyeok ("Great Opening") Thinker, Kang Mi-sook offers insightful comments on the creative works of D. H. Lawrence and Paik Nak-chung, who were both fiercely engaged in asking “What Next?” to build a better world. She explores the strength and wisdom needed to go through the current period of civilizational transformation, by analyzing the significance of Paik Nak-chung’s emphasis on kaebyeok thought in his practical critical work, how it is combined with his critique of Lawrence’s literature, and where D.H. Lawrence’s “thought-adventure” meets Korean philosophical and religious legacies.
