[Project] For a Peaceful Korean Peninsula: We Should Find Solutions in the Inter-Korean Relations / Jung Hyun Gon

The Quarterly Changbi 176, Summer 2017

Abstract

Jung Hyun Gon addresses the ways the new administration will cope with the serious situation on the Korean peninsula, which has been aggravated by North Korea's nuclear development during the last two governments. To make it worse, after the sudden shutdown of the Kaesong Industrial Complex, South Korea has lost its initiative to lead arms-limitation talks. In this situation, if we manage to solve the problem surrounding the deployment of THAAD, which providing the U. S. with an apt excuse to interfere in the Korean peninsula and Asia, by exaggerating the military risk of North Korea, it would be possible to ease the military tensions and enhance the democratic communication on the peninsula. He also focuses on the fact that during the October 4th Talk, the South and North Korean summits agreed to work toward signing a formal peace treaty for the Korean War. The new administration needs to adopt such an audacious position in order to open the road to peace again, and start a genuine debate on the significance of Inter-Korean Confederation.
