이야기 연구자, 어린이책 평론가. 1991년에 미국 남가주 대학에서 단편소설의 본질과 서구 단편소설 이론의 한계를 분석한 「단편소설의 수사학」이란 논문으로 비교문학 박사학위를 받았다. 그 뒤 건국대, 고려대, 인하대, 춘천교대 등 여러 대학에서 아동문학, 전승문학, 비교문학에 관한 강의를 다양하게 해왔다. 어린이와 어른, 동양과 서양, 과거와 현재의 경계를 넘나들면서 자유롭게 문학을 공부해왔으며, ‘옛이야기’를 화두로 삼아 우리나라와 다른 나라의 옛이야기를 비교하면서 우리 옛이야기가 지닌 보편성과 특수성을 살펴보고 있다. 더불어 옛이야기의 현대적 변용에 대해 공부하면서 『어린이문학』 『창비어린이』 『어린이와 문학』 등에 여러 평론을 발표해왔고, 『열린어린이』와 『도서관 이야기』에 옛이야기와 어린이책 관련 비평을 연재한 바 있다. 쓴 책으로 『국화꽃의 비밀』 『옛이야기의 발견』 『옛이야기와 어린이책』이 있다.

A traditional tale researcher and a children’s book critic, Kim Hwan Hee received a Ph D degree in comparative literature at the University of Southern California in 1991 with “The Rhetoric of the Short Story,” which analyzes the essence of the short story and the limitations of the Western theories of the short story. Since then, he has lectured on juvenile literature, transmitted literature, and comparative literature at diverse universities including Konkuk University, Korea University, Inha University, and Chuncheon National University of Education. Freely exploring literature regardless of whether for children or adults, Eastern or Western, past or present, Kim examines the universality and particularity of old Korean tales by comparing them with their counterparts abroad. In addition, in inquiring into the modern modification of traditional stories, he has published numerous criticisms in journals including the monthlies Children’s Literature, Changbi Children, and Children and Literature and serialized articles on old stories and criticism of children’s books in the journals Open Kid and the Story of the Library. He has also authored works including The Secret of the Chrysanthemum and The Discovery of Old Tales.
