르네상스부터 칸트 이전의 유럽철학을 전공한 학자들을 중심으로 1998년 2월에 발족했다. 단순히 서양의 근대철학을 소개하거나 번역하는 데 그치지 않고, 우리 것으로 소화 흡수하여 독자적인 시각을 확보하는 데 목적을 두고 있다. 지금까지 서양근대철학을 인물 중심으로 집대성한 『서양근대철학』(창비 2001), 서양근대철학에서 가장 큰 논쟁거리가 되어온 주제 열가지를 선정하여 소개한 『서양근대철학의 열가지 쟁점』(창비 2004), 서양근대철학의 내용 중 윤리학 분야만을 집중적으로 천착한 『서양근대윤리학』(창비 2010)과 미학 분야를 탐구한 『서양근대미학』(창비 2012)을 출간하였으며, 앞으로도 서양근대철학을 중심으로 한 연구서들을 지속적으로 출간할 예정이다.

Established in February 1998 by scholars of Western philosophy from the Renaissance to before Kant, the organization aims at not only introducing and translating but also fully assimilating modern Western thought to obtain a uniquely Korean perspective. It published in 2001 Modern Western Philosophy(published by Changbi), which synthesizes modern Western philosophy with a focus on the major figures. The organization will continue to produce the fruits of its members’ research.
