The Quarterly Changbi 182, Winter 2018

Abstract

A review of a book by Park Hee-byung, professor of Korean literature at Seoul National University, a work that interprets and critically appreciates paintings and calligraphic pieces by Neunghogwan Yi In-sang, a renowned yet relatively less known 18th-century painter in the literary artist’s style. Art historian Yu Hong-jun thinks highly of it, citing Park’s scholarship, which began with a complete translation of Yi In-sang’s writings, and went beyond an interpretation of Yi’s works, into the area of “integrated humanities,” by illuminating how Yi’s thoughts, literature, and life were combined in his works of art.
