[Dialogue] The Sites of Our Time: A First Look at the 60th Anniversary Yearlong Project ‘Fieldwork on the Move’
The Quarterly Changbi 211, Spring 2026
In this issue’s dialogue, which examines the region as a contemporary site under the theme “What Turns a Region into a Crisis?,” Paik Young-Gyung, professor of sociology at Jeju National University, leads a discussion with Park Nuri, Jeon Jun, and Ju Hyun Woo, all of whom have been actively researching and working in regional fields. Moving beyond the region as an abstract concept or a mere recipient of policy benefits, the conversation highlights the importance of listening to the real voices and seeing the real faces of the people who inhabit these places. Sharply critiquing the problems produced by the development frenzy driven by discourses of regional extinction, it reflects on the limits of linking agendas such as energy transition and AI to a doctrine of development first thinking. Sharing a common conviction that we must not simply chase after on the ground issues but instead cultivate new ways of seeing and thinking, this conversation lays the groundwork for a new yearlong series, “Fieldwork on the Move,” which will begin in the next issue.
