[Essay] A Place Called “With a Beaming Smile,” Even Though There is No Reason to Smile: Where I Live / Jeong Eun-jeong
The Quarterly Changbi 195, Spring 2022
Abstract
From this issue onward, Changbi will serialize essays under the theme “the place I live.” It is another attempt to heighten our sensibilities toward the local, in order to overcome the limitations of capital-centrism, and to rediscover ourselves through this process. We begin this serialization with a piece by agricultural sociologist Jeong Eun-jeong. Measuredly and honestly, Jeong tells us her life’s journey: through changes in her hometown Namyangju, focusing on the Wonjin Rayon Factory CS2 Poisoning Incident, and the name of the dairy company Bingre, which means “With a Beaming Smile.”
