[Essay] The Strongest, and the Weakest, to the Earthquake / Kim Gom-chi

The Quarterly Changbi 174, Winter 2016

Abstract

Kim Gom-chi, the novelist, articulates his experience of the 2016 earthquake, which occurred in his hometown, Busan. From his dynamic description, we could ascertain that the Korean Peninsula is not an earthquake safe zone any more. The concerns about the house in which he resides, justly, lead to those of the safety of nuclear power plants, but, interestingly enough, his opinion about them looks a little different from the unconditional opposition to nuclear power. As in many countries, nuclear power is controversial in South Korea, though, he discerns the earthquake as a natural phenomenon from the anxiety evoked in the mind of people, in an equanimous style.
