[Literary Criticism] Close to a State of Linguistic Weightlessness: Translating Bae Suah / Deborah Smith
The Quarterly Changbi 174, Winter 2016
Abstract
In Literary Criticism, we happily introduce the essay by Deborah Smith, the British translator whose award-winning translation of The Vegetarian is well known, both domestically and abroad. This distinctive essay delivers the authentic experience of intimate conversation--through the process of translation-- with the text, A Great Music (The Essayist's Desk) by Bae Suah, and also makes the readers feel what this novel is really about. It is, quite possibly, exemplary, both as an insightful discourse on the works by Bae Suah, and as an exploration to a new horizon of literary criticism.
