[Feature] For the Criticism of Common-Affecting Events: Literature as the Commons and the Question of Criticism / Choi Jin-seok

The Quarterly Changbi 180, Summer 2018

Abstract

Choi Jin-seok demonstrates that literature is cultural resources accessible to every member of a society, not something owned by private individuals. The merits of this article in great measure depend on the delicate way it delves into the relationships between literature and the public within the historical context, By reformulating the modern "publicness" into the present "commonness", he asks back the function of criticism in the rapidly changing reality where the public takes the initiative as subjects of creation and criticism. For him, the key word distinguishing publicness from commonness is an "affect", and to get "common-affecting" feelings revealed as "events" is referred as the crucial task of the present criticism.
