서울대학교  사회학과 교수. 1955년 경남 함양 출생. 서울대학교 사회학과 졸업 및 동대학원 졸업(문학박사). 하바드대학교 옌칭연구소 객원연구원, 전북대학교 사회학과 교수, 캘리포니아대학교 버클리캠퍼스 방문교수, 서울대학교 사회발전연구소 소장, 서울대 통일평화연구원 원장 등 역임. 저서 및 역서로 『국민, 인민, 시민』『한국 근대국가 형성과 농민』『식민권력과 근대지식』(공저)『연성복합통일론』(공저)『21세기의 한반도 구상』(공저)『현대사회학의 이해』(공저)『사회사상사』(공역) 등이 있다.

Born in 1955 in Hamyang, South Gyeongsang Province, Park Myoung-kyu studied sociology (BA and MA) at Seoul National University. Formerly a professor at the Korea Military Academy and Chonbuk National University and a visiting scholar at the Harvard-Yenching Institute, he is currently a professor at Seoul National University. He has authored The Formation of the Modern State in Korea and the Peasantry (1997) and co-authored Understanding the Social History of Korea (1996).
