서울대 독어독문학과를 졸업했다. 독일 프라이부르크 대학 및 훔볼트 대학에서 수학하고, 서울대에서 괴테 연구로 박사학위를 받았다. 현재 서울대 독어독문학과 교수이자 문학평론가로 활동 중이다. 주요 논문으로 「괴테의 상징과 알레고리 개념에 대하여」 「아우슈비츠의 기억과 재현의 문제」 등이 있고, 지은 책으로는 『독일 명작의 이해』(공저) 『독일 통일 20년』(공저) 등이 있으며, 옮긴 책으로는 『젊은 베르터의 고뇌』 『어느 사랑의 실험』 『나르치스와 골드문트』 『루카치 미학』(공역) 『진리와 방법』(공역) 등이 있다.

Born in 1959, Lim Hong Bae studied German literature at Seoul National University (BA and MA), University of Freiburg, and Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin (Ph D). Currently a literary critic and a professor at Seoul National University, he has authored "The Lessons of the Realism Debate and the Course of the Labor Novel," "Goethe's Theory of World Literature and the Adventure of Western Modernity," "Social Consciousness in Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship," and "A Critical Examination of Lukacs's Reception of Goethe."
